South Africa’s unique grape: Pinotage
In 1925, a professor at the University of Stellenbosch crossed Pinot Noir with Hermitage (Cinsaut) and Pinotage was created. This variety is unique to South Africa and is celebrated worldwide for the distinctly rich and spicy wines it produces. Today the world enjoys various styles of Pinotage from easy-drinking and full of juicy fruit whilst others are bold and restrained made to drink now or for cellaring. From winners of the ABSA Top 10 Pinotage competition over the last decade, we have selected 10 to reflect the diversity of this uniquely South African variety.
